We currently have goal-setting methodologies galore. There isn’t a company in existence that hasn’t set its share of SMART goals (most commonly defined as Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-bound). And most managers have gone through extensive training on the mechanics of constructing cogent goals. But SMART goals can still be pretty dumb.
Too often SMART Goals act as impediments to, not enablers of, bold action, and actually encourage mediocre and poor performance. “Hold on a minute,” SMART goals seem to say. “Don’t push beyond your resources, don’t bite off more than you can chew, stay within your limitations.” Maybe if we weren’t so focused on making sure our SMART goals were written correctly on our goal-setting forms, we might ask, “Is this goal fundamentally wimpy?” A well written goal may prevent you from being too impulsive, but when’s the last time it stopped you from copping out?
We need to take our existing SMART Goals and infuse them with a whole new level of energy and excitement . Most organizations are pretty good at filling out forms correctly. What we’re less adept at is making sure the content on those forms is gutsy and challenging enough to result in something great. After years of studying extraordinary organizations and the leaders who enable them, we’ve distilled the critical success factors into a goal-setting methodology called HARD Goals. Rather than making sure your goals fall within the realm of the eminently achievable, HARD Goals push everyone involved beyond their current self-imposed restraints (and help them discover where their limits, if any, really exist). This will help your SMART Goals achieve more than you ever imagined.
Some leaders are already very good at setting HARD Goals. If you look behind the scenes at every great accomplishment, you’ll find a challenging goal; a goal that tried and tested people’s beliefs about what was possible. You’ll also find a person or people who weren’t afraid to meet that challenge. In this 60-minute teleconference called Beyond SMART Goals, you’ll learn how to push your people to achieve the extraordinary, even in the toughest of times.
