In the wake of George Floyd’s death and the subsequent protests worldwide, corporate leaders have released a flurry of statements condemning racism, outlining plans for greater inclusion and, most frequently, to start listening to their employees. And virtually every company is starting to engage in some very difficult conversations.
But do your leaders and employees actually know HOW TO LISTEN WITH EMPATHY (AND WITHOUT DEFENSIVENESS)?
If your people cannot listen to each other without getting defensive, you could fracture your culture and create even greater pain. And research shows that only 30% of leaders can currently listen with empathy!
That’s why we’re hosting a special live 1-hour event called HOW TO LISTEN WITH EMPATHY (AND WITHOUT DEFENSIVENESS)!
Taught by NYT Bestseller Mark Murphy, author of Truth At Work: The Science Of Tough Messages, you’ll learn the science & scripts for listening with empathy, hearing without defensiveness, and a step-by-step guide for handling even the most uncomfortable conversations.
At this moment in history, listening with empathy may be the most important skill a leader can have! So give your people the latest psychological science and communication techniques to successfully handle even the most uncomfortable conversations!
In this 1-hour webinar, you’ll learn:
- How a technique called Perspective-Taking leads to others feeling 78% more empathy towards us
- Discover the science of Perspective-Taking, and how it differs from sympathy, active listening, and more
- How to use Temporal Distancing to immediately reduce negative emotions and make tough conversations more productive
- Why Structured Listening is so much more powerful than older techniques like active listening
- The 3-Steps to effective Structured Listening: Eliciting, Listening and Confirming
- The Seven Phrases you should NEVER use when you’re trying to listen with empathy and avoid defensiveness
- How psychological phenomena like Cognitive Dissonance and the Dunning-Kruger effect cause people to deny, resist or attack the truth
- The Two Tests that determine whether you’ve truly heard your employees’ thoughts and feelings
- The 7-Question Candid Culture Test to assess whether your culture is fully prepared to engage in uncomfortable conversations and truly listen to your people

I was fortunate enough to participate a four part Leadership IQ e-Learning series presented by Mark Murphy that helped enhance my leadership skills. Each class was informative, pertinent, and helpful to my position at the Firm. I found this course, “The Science of Managing Remote Employees”, equally beneficial. The material is presented in a format that is logical and easy to understand, and more importantly relevant to today’s work environment. The information is backed up with reputable research and examples you can relate to in real life. I look forward to more Leadership IQ e-Learning classes in the future.

Dealing with Bullies and Intimidators was a great session. I was anxious to attend as I work with and for some toxic people. This program has now provided me with the tools to avoid being their target, identify warning signs, and becoming assertive and in some instances protective of myself. I normally would submit for reimbursement for classes but I am treating this as a therapy session and it was well worth the price. I will review all the information until it becomes a natural response for me. It will also be a great reference point for further conversations with both my staff (who are awesome) as well as my colleagues and my superiors with whom some of the struggles come. Thanks for all the insight!
