There isn’t a company in existence that hasn’t set its share of SMART goals (usually defined as Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-bound).
But new research shows that SMART goals all too often act as impediments to – not enablers of – bold action and actually encourage mediocre and poor performance.
Goals are supposed to help us achieve extraordinary results, yet SMART goals seem to say, “Hold on a minute. Don’t push beyond your resources, don’t bite off more than you can chew, play it safe and stay within your limitations.” So leadership training and research firm Leadership IQ studied 4,182 workers from 397 organizations to see if "achievable" and "realistic" goals really do drive great achievement. Here's what we found:
- Only 15% of employees strongly agree that their goals will help them achieve great things.
- And only 13% of employees strongly agree that their goals this year will help them maximize their full potential.
We set goals to elicit truly great achievement, but as you can see 85% of employees say it simply doesn't work. It's time for a new goal-setting method that does work.
In this free white paper, we reveal all of the study's findings, and we propose a new goal-setting method proven to elicit extraordinary achievement.
